U.S., Canadian jets intercept 6 Russian aircraft near Alaska

September 2014ALASKA Two F-22 fighter jets intercepted six Russian military airplanes that neared the western coast of Alaska, military officials said Friday. Lt. Col. Michael Jazdyk, a spokesman for the North American Aerospace Defense Command, or NORAD, said the U.S. jets intercepted the planes about 55 nautical miles from the Alaskan coast at about 7 p.m. Pacific time Wednesday. The Russian planes were identified as two IL-78 refueling tankers, two Mig-31 fighter jets and two Bear long-range bombers. They looped south and returned to their base in Russia after the U.S. jets were scrambled.
At about 1:30 a.m. Thursday, two Canadian CF-18 fighter jets intercepted two of the long-range bombers about 40 nautical miles off the Canadian coastline in the Beaufort Sea. In both cases, the Russian planes entered the Air Defense Identification Zone, which extends about 200 miles from the coastline. They did not enter sovereign airspace of the United States or Canada. Jazdyk said the fighter jets were scrambled “basically to let those aircraft know that we see them, and in case of a threat, to let them know we are there to protect our sovereign airspace.” In the past five years, jets under NORAD’s command have intercepted more than 50 Russian bombers approaching North American airspace. NORAD is a binational American and Canadian command responsible for air defense in North America. –Yahoo News

  1. Testing for weakness I would gather.

  2. Dennis E. says:

And who said the cold war was over and the Bear was dead?

  3. Dov says:

The Russian Defence Ministry claims that there were 4 Mig-31’s, not two, which means our boys would have been watching the fireworks from their parachutes if the Russians had been serious.

  4. niebo says:

“They did not enter sovereign airspace of the United States or Canada.”

After the initial appeal (with specific but irrelevant details) to our protective/defensive emotions, in the latter half of the source article, they mention the actual truth.

  5. Thanks to the internet we are able to compare information outlets and
form our own opinion.,Kiev, NATO are as guilty as Russia of fighting a
    propaganda war.

The west were quick to denounce Russia for shooting down the Malaysian
airliner without giving any proof to back up her allegations, it was
    enough to increase sanctions

Now we have Poroshenko talking about Russian affiliated insurgents in
east-Ukraine and Reuters and others distribute this as “invasion”.

After all major news-entities repeated the “invasion” claim and the public damage is done they simply later take it back.

Undoubtedly there are Russians fighting on the side of the separatists with Russian made weapons.

Until now the weapons the separatists are using are the same Soviet
stuff as those held by the Kiev forces. Evidence that the insurgents are
using modern Russian weaponry have not surfaced.
We were fed that a Kiev military victory was on the cards, now it seems this is
only propaganda, apparently they were getting battered, long before the
news broke about so called invasions.

Obama’s indignation over Russia is laughable considering the daily drone
attacks in Pakistan and Yemen, secret CIA flights to torture
prisoners, its the USA’s own history of promoting democracy around the
    world
When the USA gets involved in promoting ‘democratic values, history
tells us that civil war, famine and oligarch/CIA paid death squads will
attempt to strangle any chance of them becoming a truly independent
state. Korea, Indonesia, Cuba, Vietnam, Chile,Nicaragua, El Salvador,
Afghanistan, Iraq, Venezuela, Libya (Syria-work in progress) In all of
these countries the USA supported the most anti democratic forces
Now its the turn of Ukraine, God help them..
